  1. I ve always loved to read than anything in the world, especially so called genre stories mysteries, fantasy, sci fi, thrillers, horror I like books that take you by the hand and lead you out of the mundane That ease back the curtain and show you the wondrous and dark and unexpected lurking just around the next corner I worked in journalism for a long time before I returned to writing fiction Guess which is fun

  1. Original Post The Thirteenth Gate at FLYL F flylef A WEEKEND SET aside to enjoy some quality time with one of my favorite authors, Kat Ross, and her new release The Thirteenth Gate, has, as I d hoped, been very enjoyable. As a huge fan of The Fourth Element series going through a bit of withdrawal, The Thirteenth Gate is the perfect genre, mash up remedy Many characters from The Fourth Element intersect in this book, including Lady Vivienne Tijah and Alec Lawrence Achaemenes , and a few other uns [...]

  2. There are two story lines that are happening simultaneously in The Thirteenth Gate but there is also a point where they intersect The investigation of partners Lady Vivienne Cumberland and Alec Lawrence take place in London They are after a man that Lady Vivienne suspected as being Jack the Ripper but lacked enough proof to bring him to trial Without enough proof, the suspect was placed in a private mental hospital for close observation to determine his mental stability Although Lady Vivienne ha [...]

  4. I am a huge fan of all Kat Ross books, so when I heard The Thirteenth Gate had characters from The Fourth Element series AND was a sequel to The Daemoniac I nearly fell off my chair. Not only was the book a complex and page turning mystery, but the historical tone drew me into a different time She painted such vivid and realistic pictures of both New York and London that I felt I could navigate the streets The villains were terrifying, the characters as familiar as old friends, and the story itse [...]

  5. We are the light against the darkness And now we ve failed in our duty Clarence is gone, she said bitterly Escaped He murdered an orderly There s no doubt it s the same creature that ran loose in New York None at all Kat Ross, you have created a fan for life I absolutely loved this, for many of the same reasons I loved The Daemoniac the first book in the series last year The Thirteenth Gate is Well paced I can t say this enoughKat Ross just gets pacing.Full of familiar and new characters who you [...]

  6. The Thirteenth Gate is the first proper book of the Dominion Mysteries series, since The Daemoniac was of a prequel, and in this one we get to meet so old friends from the Fourth Element series I was so very excited to read on the adventures of Harry and John and since there was a bit of a chance of pace with the re introduction of Alex and Vivienne and magic into the detective story that the prequel was I felt a bit disconnected from the story till I connected again with Alex and Vivienne, a [...]

  7. I have to be honest and say I wasn t quite sure about this book the first 75 pages or so I have been greatly anticipating this book s release in part because I loved Harry and John from The Daemoniac and couldn t wait to see what they ve been up to However, this book opens up with all new characters at least all new to me I later found out it brings forward some main characters from Ross Fourth Element Series Having not read them but now I want to I was somewhat let down and confused Luckily tha [...]

  8. I have waited for this baby and the minute I got it, I dropped pretty much everything I was doing and dove in Man oh man One word Perfect Alright so we continue on from The Daemoniac where we met Harry and John and we continue on with their adventures as Harry is now a slightly experienced investigator We also have the introduction of 2 new characters Lady Vivienne Cumberland and her companion Alec Lawrence. We were warned at the end of Queen of Chaos that we were going to see familiar character [...]

To read all my book reviews, plus author interviews, guest posts and book extracts, visit my blog whatcathyreadnext.wordpress In the universe there are things that are known, and things that are unknown, and in between, there are doors What do you get if you take an intricately plotted, suspenseful historical mystery set in 19th century London and New York and add ghouls and daemons An enthralling, wonderfully entertaining read, that s what I m not much into paranormal or fantasy but I really en [...]

  10. When books in a series claim to be a stand alone read, I m wary to the idea and feel the need to start the series from the first book however, I couldn t help but feel drawn to check this one out I yearn for the time of the 19th century pre technology days a simple, yet enthralling time period that held a lot of secrets The heroine, Lady Vivienne has a fiery side that I instantly felt a kinship with as I read through her fight against evil powers I thought the mystical fantasy element would des [...]

  11. I received a copy of this book in return for my honest review from Xpresso Book Tours I started reading the Thirteenth Gate right after I finished the Daemoniac which was fantastic The writing is just as solid as before, the characters are interesting, and this time there s a fascinating lore behind the world that I want to pick apart What disappointed me was the sudden supernatural element whereas the Daemoniac, for all its spookiness, always felt rooted in reality From what I ve read, I gathe [...]

  12. I was a little disappointed by The Daemoniac, the first book in the new series by Kat Ross I mean just a teeny tiny bit disappointed, afterall it s still Kat Ross and she s amazing But after reading the Forth Element series I was expecting fantasy, super natural In the Daemoniac almost everything super natural ends up with an explanation It s much like a Sherlock Holmes novel. But my disappointment ended with The Thirteenth Gate Which brings in characters and lore from the Forth Element droppi [...]

  13. Demons, Mayhem and Murder The problem, for me, with reading a book that is fast paced, well written and exciting, with characters I care about, oohs that I always read it too fast, and then it s over, and I m sad The Thirteenth Gate moves at a good clip, its paired mysteries, with their paired sleuths, skillfully woven together And there s just a tiny hint of romance, or rather unspoken love, between each pair just enough to make the reader want Altogether a highly satisfying read, and I just w [...]

  14. Absolutely fantastic Breathtaking descriptions, thickening plots, and intriguing characters Kat Ross has done it again 13th Gate is a great detective novel, mixing the supernatural with late 19th century flavor.

  15. Fresh off The Daemoniac , this one felt like two totally different books put together I really felt confused at the way that it went from no supernatural or hints to all the supernatural, all the time I felt like I had missed a book, or even a short story, between the first and second one.And I really missed having Harry be the focus.I did enjoy it and I look forward to in the series It probably did not help that I immediately read this after the first one the changes in style and focus are ver [...]

  16. When Dr William Clarence escapes from the Greymoor Lunatic Asylum, two people are very alarmed if not especially surprised because only they suspect the doctor s true nature Lady Vivienne Cumberland and her companion, Alec Lawrence, have a long history with secrets, the kind of secrets that are held because most people wouldn t believe them anyway, and Lady Vivienne s warnings about the doctor had not been heeded One of those secrets is that Clarence, a New York Police Department surgeon, may po [...]

  17. Independent Reviewer for Archaeolibrarian I Dig Good Books I enjoyed the thirteenth gate , second part of the dominion series I had read the first book previously but it s possible to read this without any previous knowledge of how the characters are connected The series is what I d call helpful, but not essential The new dynamics of Vivienne and Alec are explored in this book in addition to the characters of the first book I found that I warmed immensely to these two characters particularly.Be [...]

  18. I received a copy of this book from Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review All opinions are my own and not influenced by my source Like it s predecessor, this one has a slower build to it But once everything comes together, it s rather exciting to see everything come into play I adore Harry and John as characters and I wish they were featured a touch here Vivienne and Alec were definitely intriguing, but I m unfamiliar with their origin series The Midnight Sea The Forth Elements so [...]

  19. Thank you to Xpresso Book Tours and author Kat Ross for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review Find this review and on my blog The Rest Is Still Unwritten The Thirteenth Gate is Kat Ross s latest release and is a thrilling tale of murder, mystery and the demonic set amongst a sharp and gritty Victorian London background that will captivate readers with its beguiling storyline London towards the end of the 19th century has been the victim of a series of brutal, almost inhuman [...]

  20. I received this book in exchange for an honest review All thoughts and opinions are my own I started reading The Thirteenth Gate as soon as I finished reading The Daemoniac because I was so into the story that, I just had to know what would happen Since this is a sequel, I d advice you to read my review on the first book in the series, because I really don t want to get too much into the story in this review and spoil the plot and the direction it takes You can find it here.I m going to start wi [...]

  21. I adored the first book in the seires This sequel somehow managed to match it With a diverse cast, wonderful representation, and a stunning plot I gave this book four stars.I ll start with the two things that frustrated me The first is that there is a plethora of characters that were sometimes introduced too close together I had to go back and re read to make sure that I had gotten all the names right This book is filled with suspects and interesting people, but keeping up with them all was a bi [...]

  23. Anyone who knows me knows I hate to read historical books, doesn t matter whether it s romance or horror, I can t stand it Then I read The Daemoniac by Kat Ross, I absolutely loved it So when I had the chance to read this second book in the series I jumped on it These books are historical but they don t read that way and that is my favorite thing about them I also like the characters and the plots and subtle nods to history, that even someone like me can appreciate This book takes us across the [...]

  24. Intelligent New Heroine Blazing Her Own TrailGreat continuation of the series The story invites you in and makes you fall in love with the heroin who becomes a role model as she fearlessly burns her own path in life and blazes a trail for future heroins to follow The story is a great weave of the realistic and fantasy fighting the monsters if the dark and the fear that lurks in everyone The heroine faces her own fear to do what s right and make the world safe for the innocent and unsuspecting.

  25. Dark but wonderful I didn t think this could be any darker than The Daemoniac, but I was wrong And I loved it I adore these characters, particularly John, the cheeky John Watson hiding here in nineteenth century New York I love the entire series, and I love Kat Ross for dragging us along with her I m desperate to revisit them already, particularly Darius, but I ll try and be patient This book will not disappoint you.

  26.
