A viral Books Critical Hit This was a delightful little book, and it feels as though it has a pretty specific audience, which, thankfully, I'm a part of. The Amazon description says: "You don't have to be a level 15 tiefling warlock (or even know what that is) to enjoy it!" While that's technically true, it would definitely help . If you're a woman who loves women, you know what Armor Class is, and you'd recognize quotes from Dune and The Fellowship of the Ring, then you're going to find a lot of joy and representation in this book. If not, you may find yourself making a scrunchy face as a number of references and situations sail past you.For me, the nerd representation was what lured me to the title. We see so many lesroms about doctors and lawyers and CEOs, but I'm none of those things; I'm just a dork with Fine Arts degree I never use and a brain full of Douglas Adams quotes I never stop using, and this is one of the first lesroms I've read that features characters I might actually know in real life. I love that. It's not perfect, though. There's the all-too-common breakup at the 75% mark, an ending that felt just a little too pat, the D&D scenes were only okayish, there were extra spaces between every paragraph (a la fanfic), and I'm still trying to figure out how Lacey made it to 30 without having any friends of her own to confide in. However. This was a sweet little story with a little bit of angst, a few tropes, and a premise that spoke directly to who I am. If it speaks to you, too, you'll probably enjoy it as much as I did.4 stars

  1. This was a delightful little book, and it feels as though it has a pretty specific audience, which, thankfully, I m a part of The description says You don t have to be a level 15 tiefling warlock or even know what that is to enjoy it While that s technically true, it would definitely help If you re a woman who loves women, you know what Armor Class is, and you d recognize quotes from Dune and The Fellowship of the Ring, then you re going to find a lot of joy and representation in this book If no [...]

  2. The snippets of the DnD campagin in this book are the best part of it Honestly, the couple is kind of boring, and their arguments don t feel real.Like, for example view spoiler Lesbian isn t fond of bi girls, because in high school, girls used her to experiment and then went back to their boyfriends Bi Girl DEFENDS THESE GIRLS because that s biphobic everyone deserves to experiment Fuck off Regardless of gender, using someone for physical stuff and then turfing them, is shitty Experimentation is [...]

  3. i stopped reading this 37% because GOD the main characters rampant outdated biphobia makes me wanna Yell bonus points for how they view spoiler have sex after the third time they ve ever seen each other hide spoiler without adressing it no than 10 minutes of in book time after the main character was complaining about bisexuals to her best friend bonus points for the dialogue implying lesbian asexual are mutually exclusive identitiese sad bit is that outside the painfully unlikable protagonist [...]

  4. Games, drama and electric touches equals red hot romance 4.5ish stars.I m pretty sure that I ve read this book before The story and characters were fresh in my memory Not sure if this is a reissued edition or something else but, I loved it Reading it for a second time was just as deeply charming as the first time Kris and Lacey meet under less than ideal circumstances Each woman buckles under the weight of her own emotional baggage Time spent together eases the burdens caused by a failed relatio [...]

  5. The dog stuff was really weird I think it s super shitty to view spoiler scold your girlfriend for pushing your dog off a bed without even hurting him right after her dad was admitted to the hospital and she s worried he s literally going to die Plus, it is totally possible for a dog to make a chemo patient ill It wasn t what happened in this particular case, but to act like there s no risk and that Kris is being ridiculous for being concerned and protective of her father is super condescending [...]

  6. Pretty goodI did enjoy this story, but I felt it could have used a little work before publishing For starters, there were some basic editing errors Beyond that, I felt the author could have dug a little deeper with the emotional development of the main characters and their relationship Everytime there is an argument, they have sex Everytime they are sad, they have sex I understand sex can be a bonding and healing element between two people, but I would have liked to see a few deeper conversati [...]

  7. Wonderfully done in partsI very much enjoyed this book The characters had depth and nuance, their positive qualities as well as their flaws and all the little aspects of commitment and communication and emotional intimacy that make up a relationship are beautifully explored Kris and Lacey were wonderful characters, and is love to read about them The one problem for me, though, was easy to much of the sex fixes everything trope in life and death situations, even It just felt artificial Maybe thi [...]

  8. This was an impulse buy, as I was intrigued by the dungeons and dragons theme to a lesbian romance Unfortunately the beginning of the book didn t really grab me I found it hard work to read, the story didn t flow well because every thought or word was over analysed Then nearly half way through the whole nature of the book changed I m not sure how but Kris and Lacey suddenly went from being unsure about each other to a couple having sex every other page Followed, inevitably, by the massive breaku [...]

  9. Oh my gawd, that was so good Everything felt so organic and the sensuality and sexuality was so well executed I sobbed and I laughed I m not the biggest into DnD and stuff, but I love the story and the way the campaign was integrated A great, fun read with characters that just touch the heart.I especially love that everyone is flawed in some way or another Lacey is very relatable for me, although I don t know if I m so bad that I have to fix things like she did David was such a great character a [...]

  10. This book gave me a feeling of nostalgia that left me with a smile on my face every time I turned a page I think that being a lesbian that played DD a long time ago made it easier to fell in love with this book.Even if one does not know anything about DD, I think it is a good introduction to what is the game without immersing in technical and specific details So I think readers that never played before would understand the story anyway, it won t be a problem. There are lots of references to the L [...]

  11. Excellent premise, nice characters, average execution This book could be improved a lot by simple editing oftentimes there are typos, or character names are switched by mistake, some sentences are just clunky A lot of the queer stuff is just wrong bi means both let trans people love who they love trans is not an orientation , the MC s biphobia, etc One can only read so many sex scenes in a row when they don t further the plot Also, a lot of the action is just told after the fact instead of shown [...]

  12. Critical Hit is a sweet love story that seems to hit on the nature of relationships and the baggage that goes with them No hero s in just a kilt in this one thankfully but rather nerdy girls who play D D They are brought together by one of the girls male friends You have to read it for the rest It is not a plot that is unique but no one reads romance to think The characters are believable and the love vs loss entanglement in the plot helps the story along nicely.

  13. So well written This has surprised me so much The way the emotional issues each girl brings into the relationship was so well done The lesbian who has mosgivings about bisexuals The two very different personalities The way lust and desire to get laid can throw all your misgivings out So impressed.

  14. AwesomeI love the story of Lacey and I Kristen, is well written, erotic and sweet The characters are charming, the relationship grew naturally, David and Barkely had a very important rol in the book I enjoyed it so much I want to recommend it to everyoneis is a must in our personal library excellent, awesome job Em beautifully done

  15. Great book This was a really good story The flow kept me engaged from the very start I loved the DD gaming The details about it were amazing. The romance was nice A bit quick but really good I really liked how the emotions of this book were real and raw It made me truly feel what the Characters were going through. This is a must read for sure.

  16. Lacey and Kris are a fabulous couple and compliment each other nicely I liked that while both of them had the best of intentions neither one was too perfect They come across as very real and that doesn t always happen I know nothing of Dungeons and Dragons but I was able to follow the story just fine and even got into it a bit than I thought I would.

  17. 4.5, only because the inevitable bit of drama annoyed me Love love love all the geek Never felt like too much, and personally I might would ve liked Always have been interested in DD, and between this and Community, I feel like I really need to give it a try Loved it Going on my short list of faves.

  18. A good readThis was a love story I was a little hesitant because of the gaming, but that is just how they meet There is laughter, sadness, and just the right amount of angst A good read Will read books by Em Stevens.

  19. It made me laugh and cry and wish that I was in Kris DD group I loved it and the only thing that held me up was knowing that a sad part was coming up and not wanting to ugly cry at work.

  20. When I first read the blurb for the book, I was a bit nervous about reading it because I myself have been playing DD for about ten years now I ve seen attempts to make stories about gamers that come off as clich , or the characters just follow certain dry tropes, but I was very much surprised by Stevens book I ended up loving it The characters are believable, the parts with DD are as believable as you can get in a novel without being hit with a barrage of stats and numbers, and the story flowed [...]

  21. Might Be A Good StoryBut why on earth am I reading a nook that is published with strike throughs and other editing marks I simply cannot Maybe they won t bother other readers and you ll find a sweet romance here.

  22. Excellent book I loved Critical Hit Excellent reading It s always interesting when two characters from different backgrounds come together Very interesting reading about the gaming world That s a part of life I know nothing about Loved the ending.

  23. EpicI really loved this story While it was sad, it was also very awesome I would love to roll up a character and join the people from the story in a game
