  1. This is how women sometimes turn into witches We come home from work one day too many to discover our partners curled up on the couch like leeches in a nice warm tank, and we decide it s better to take up with a hut with chicken legsother fantastic tor short, and this one makes elizabeth bear 2 for 2, which i am taking as a sign from the universe to read something full length from her perhaps her new one, which also seems to be a sign directed at me Karen Memorythanks to miriam for the heads up. [...]

  2. b is for BearSo I used to be in a very long term live in domestic relationship And my boyfriend lived with ME, in MY APARTMENT He still had a house that he owned outright, and had an apartment in his office so he could stay there when he needed to work late, but he was with ME in MY APARTMENT in which I paid the rent 90% of the time And for the most part, especially in the beginning, it was great We each had our routines, and it was, for the most part, a very safe, comfortable relationship. But a [...]

This is what happens when I set my expectations HIGH I loved Elizabeth Bear s short story The Horrid Glory of its Wings So when I saw her name attached to a new short on Tor I was elated and instantly marked it on my to read list.I was underwhelmed.I don t know if it is my personal expectations OR the fact that I just read two major wins in a row, and I don t really care This short was just not as good I found some of the elements presented very intriguing, however the execution just didn t come [...]

  4. Nice little story set in Moscow though apart from the character s names and Metro stations, nothing is revealed about the city , in the near future a possible one, with so little fuel left that only rich people afford it , with a strong feeling of reality.

  5. Gahh I really loved this Usually tor shorts feel like fragments, advertisements for longer works and that s okay sometimes I go on to read the longer works But not this one This was full, and complete, and satisfying See how I worked that sort of food analogy in there It s because the people in the story never have quite enough food How clever am I Also, I read this while I ate dinner The passage that hooked me This is how women sometimes turn into witches We come home from work one day too many [...]

  6. I took a breath She looked at me, waiting for me to finish I said, Some scientists say evolution is a struggle between female and male in the same species Males want to make as many babies as they can, anywhere, any time Females want to make sure the babies they raise are as strong and smart as possible From the best males Do you believe that I laughed It sounds like something a guy who thinks he s something special would come up with, doesn t it A justification They re as God made them She rais [...]

  7. This is another TOR story They post some really good stuff over there.Ilya is trying to convince Petra to harvest a liver for money He s in a band and while she slaves away as a cocktail waitress, he pretty much sits on his ass playing his guitar which he s not even that great at doing.A chance encounter with a dog on a train makes Petra curious So curious that she shares food with the dog and even reads up about the animals And when the dog leads her to a horrible discovery, Petra decides she s [...]

  8. A very nice sci fi from Bear Set in a near future Moscow, young woman struggling to work her way through college as a really crappy boyfriend and a nice loyal dog friend Nice characters, nice story other than being in Moscow, nothing overwhelming about the setting.

  9. Aside from a slightly awkward infodump about canine evolution, this is a nice little story about near future Moscow, deadbeat musicians, how women become witchesd an amazing dog.

  10. Certainly having one of those days that I feel like going to live in a little hut with chicken legs as well.I loved all of the references to other folk stories.

  11. WOW I can t remember the last time I ve enjoyed a short story so much The main character in this story is fantastically written it was like reading my own reactions to the things she encounters I loved the Russian setting and the wise babushka on the train and the shaggy dog Just a lovely, rich story.

  12. An intrinsic look at how a near future environmental change has affected the planet, the culture, and its animals It seems the world has experienced widespread global warming and harvesting genetic material to help in health and fertility has become widespread It takes place in a science fiction world but hold to fairy tale aspects as narrated by Petra I found it brave of her to sever herself from a destructive and parasitic relationship in ways than one Spoilers start here The ending left me [...]

  13. How is it that you never hear about how much your friends hate your lover until you get rid of him or her Nice story because there s a dog This is the opening quote We are alone, absolutely alone on this chance planet and, amid all the forms of life that surround us, not one, excepting the dog, has made an alliance with us Maurice MaeterlinckAnd then I loved this intro on the author on tor Elizabeth Bear was born on the same day as Frodo and Bilbo Baggins, but in a different year When coupled wi [...]

  14. 3.5 starsThis was a very enjoyable read I really liked this story, the characters and the plot Especially the dog I loved her And I liked these lines that describe the dependency between humans and dogs They had teeth and we had fire They had better hearing and smell and we had hands and better sight It was a contract, between us and them I would give this a full 4 stars but the ending was kind of chilling, at least for me I know I m not the one to judge one s choice but still I was sad and disa [...]

  15. Quite recently I read about the real life dogs that travel in the Moscow underground, so it was really nice to read this story where one of these dogs plays a central role I liked very much some elements of this story but others seemed weak to me such as the conversation between Petra and the older lady on the Metro, which sounded really forced and unnatural and 90% of which could have been cut or redristributed along the story. The setting in a near future Russia was great, and the relationship [...]

  16. This is just a delightful short story with a whole bunch of moral thoughts contained therein. One of the nice things about using is all the wonderful people who spent time finding little treasures for the rest of us.Thanks to Jess for finding and sharing this one.You can find a free link to the story on Jess s review a quick read and well worth the 20 minutes or so.

  17. I always want with short stories, because the media itself doesn t allow for much world or character building.I liked this particular short story, I thought the premise was rather interesting, and then the relationships between the characters yes, even the dog , were well done and felt real well maybe the reaction of the guy is a little out of proportions, I wouldn t know.It was a sci fi or rather speculative fiction maybe story that felt like it could actually become real true.

  18. This harsh short story, about a love relationship, takes place in a speculative Russia.Sometimes love can lead you to ugly things, like being in a relationship with a total jerk This story was a perfect illustration of this problem and I really wanted to throw the guy by the window, from the beginning to the end The dog presence was an unusual addition and gave an interesting atmosphere to this well built story.

  19. I don t believe I ve ever read Bear before, but she is awesome This is one of those short glimpse stories that you wish could go on longer Near future, set in Moscow, about a down on her luck student waitress and her total loser boyfriend And there s a very cool dog.

  20. This is how women sometimes turn into witches We come home from work one day too many to discover our partners curled up on the couch like leeches in a nice warm tank, and we decide it s better to take up with a hut with chicken legs.

  21. I m starting to think I have a bit of an affinity for Russian stories I really enjoyed this one I loved Petra s character, and I thought the hints of the bigger world that Bear hinted at were fascinating Really good

  22. This is how women sometimes turn into witches We come home from work one day too many to discover our partners curled up on the couch like leeches in a nice warm tank, and we decide it s better to take up with a hut with chicken legs.A good chicken legged hut will never disappoint you.

  23. This is a story of a dog and a waitress dating an handsome but selfish artist I know, it sounds horrible and uninteresting, but it is surprisingly a remarkably good story I do not want to spoil it, so I won t say , but give it a try, it s good.

  24. Well, all in all this story was nice but I didn t like anyone in this story The fairy tale part was lovely Also Na zdorovie That s not a popular Russian toast Ugh Things like that prevented me from enjoying this book.
