The best Books The Accidental Marriage Synopsis: a gay man and woman make a baby for weird reasons. Bad stuff happens. Boom! now they're married. Everything else goes wrong. They were strong and brave, but suddenly they snap in an unprecedented fashion. Read this book if you:a. Like traditional nuclear families with traditional gender roles.b. Like a predictable, feel-good story.c. Don't like variations in dialect.d. Woke up this morning and were like, "You know what I want today? Some light homophobia."Let me preface this by saying that I wanted to like this book. But, seriously, all gay relationships in this book are portrayed as mostly abusive, at the very least unhealthy; vindictive; inflexible; and linked to the gay mafia (??). Ultimately, the message seems to be the same, although repackaged for our reading pleasure: gay people are scary and confused, do not trust them. Also, can we discuss the gender roles? Man is the provider. Woman goes from one dependent relationship to another. Man is burdened with family life, longs for freedom. Woman stays home to cook and clean in exchange for financial provision. Those are the big examples. And things get better two-thirds through when Megan makes a couple friends and gets a small part-time job. But there's a delicate sprinkling of misogyny throughout. It's like looking for easter eggs, except the prize inside is the same old s&%t. Okay, and one last, seemingly random, incident I must address: Scott's conversation with his mom. Without giving away TOO many spoilers, suffice it to say, thatan accidental pregnancy is the fault of BOTH partners. His mom's choices weren't wise and weren't the best foundation for a relationship, but for real...she was "as much responsible" for him walking out on his family? No. Just...no. But it's good Scott heard these things, because now he's free to see his accidental wife and the product of his sperm donation as the burdens that they are. So much so that he anticipates possibly murdering the infant. Because he has to one-up his absent father. The struggle is real. Look, a lot people loved this book. So maybe go read it and see what you think for yourself. But if you'd like a few more insights, look to the stars...5 stars for taking on a tough issue. 5 stars for making the Great Lakes the land of (slightly unattractive) milk and honey. I dig it!5 stars for Helge. Helge is kind. Helge is dependable. Helge is maybe yes the only strong woman in this book. Helge is smart. Be like Helge. 5 stars for the awesome homemade snack I made while reading this book. It involved oyster crackers. This story also involved oyster crackers. See, it all connects!1 star for mediocre writing.1 star for wrapping things up way, way too tight. 1 star for predictability.1 star for making me watch a Hallmark movie in my head, dammit.1 star for the "gay mafia", wut??1 star for women thanking men with sex. Even gay men. It's our best currency. 1 star for babies being perfect until it suits the plot.1 star for bad German engineering. Yeah, I owned a Beetle, I know what really went down.1 star for the way people talk in this book. It's like the opposite of Sarah Palin: it makes too much sense, it's dull and dry, and it's pithy to a fault. 0 stars for homophobia and sexism, unless you're into that, in which case high-five again, bro! You did well this week!

  2. Marriage is a hot topic right now, as well it should be And this is a book that s just what this whole conversation needs It s a take on the issue of love that not only got my attention, but that also kept me smiling. Here s the set up Scott and Megan are friends, each in separate same sex relationships Megan and her lover decide to have a baby, and it s natural to Megan that Scott be the donor As it happens, Megan gets pregnant and her lover abandons her after some abusive acts Scott, ever the p [...]

  3. The setup for this novel might sound like the plot of a mediocre rom com or tv show, but don t let that fool you it s truly terrible This isn t an honest tribute to the value of married love and self sacrifice, it s a wish fulfillment fantasy It s like a sappy Hallmark Christmas movie about sexual ethics Scott and Megan, a self described couple of gays, are both trapped in miserable, exploitative relationships because apparently all other homosexuals have no redeeming qualities By a twist of fat [...]

  5. I looked at this book on Ignatius website several times, each time rejecting it, because the subject matter is very emotional for me, and I dreaded that if it was done badly, or just not done very well, it would be distressing to me When I finally thought I had better read it, I learned a very valuable lesson to trust Ignatius catalog This novel is not just done well, it is done beautifully, with deep and true charity, and even heartfelt humor While it is most certainly a novel for our distressi [...]

  6. An interesting take on what marriage and love means The author takes a complex and hot button topic and overall, does a great job of approaching it with sincerity and honesty I had issue with how it portrays certain topics, but this also challenges you to think about whether something is as good as it appears on the surface Excellent, thought provoking read.

  7. It was a good story, but very shallow The characters were only skin deep, with no real sense of their personalities emerging The ending was also trite The story kept me turning pages, but when I reached the final chapters, I started cringing Sogood message, poor delivery.

  8. 9. I was intrigued when I read the description of the new novel published by Ignatius Press, The Accidental Marriage How would a Catholic publisher cover the subject matter of a man living an actively gay lifestyle, fathering the child of a woman living with her lesbian lover, and they end up raising the child together I often remarked to my husband that this was going to be a difficult book to review as I read it Difficult not because the book wasn t a good one, but due to the complexity of the su [...]

  10. This novel, about a gay man who offers to help his lesbian friend have a baby to appease her partner, was not an easy story to get into At the outset, the characters seemed rather flat It was not until things fell apart for both of them that I started to feel sympathy for the characters, or even like them I thought that things were wrapped up just a little too neatly. The character I really wished I d heard about and from was Helge Now there s a character with a story to tell. That said, the auth [...]

  11. I liked it and would recommend it However, I found the plot, especially the grand realizations and personal transformations at the end of the book to be far fetched and too optimistic It also took me until 3 4 into the book to start truly enjoying it Up to that point, the characters seemed flat and unrelateable, but that changed towards the end I do think this book approaches the ideas of what love and sexual identity mean from a holistic, human perspective

  12. Got this by mistake was looking for a book with a similar title But I heard of this one also so I figured what the heck The book was pretty predictable Main characters are supposed to be gay not a spoiler you learn this right away but this aspect of their character description never rang true I think the author was too preachy and I believe his thinking is flawed as well.

  13. This book really is sweet It tells the story from Scott s view How two same sex friend have a child and how they go through a very difficult journey together I m quite happy on what could happen in the end I sure will root for Scott and Megan They ve been through a lot I would like to read the story from Megan s view though.

  14. I very much enjoyed this book The characters were engaging and the plot kept me guessing The ending was too much of a set up for a sequel The resolution of the negative homosexual lifestyles engaged in by the main characters was a bit too neat and tidy to seem believable, but as a work of fiction with redeeming Catholic values it is worth the read.

  15. I received this book as a first read I couldn t get into it It went so far beyond suspension of disbelief and the realm of possibility that it was hard not to laugh at the farcical nature of it.
