  2. If you love attending outstanding theater performances, working in the theater, reading exceptional writing, relishing all that makes San Francisco so great, listening to stories that appall and then inspire youpick any one, and you ll love this book.

  3. Not quite an area of interest for me but thought I d try it and was very impressed Learned a lot about other parts of society that I knew nothing about and enjoyed it.

  4. Read this because it was SF s One City One Book book While it was interesting to read about ACT from behind the scenes so to speak, the book overall was rather disorganized in structure so at the end there was no real sense of an arc that the author or the theater went through With focus I think this could have been a really great book about the revitalization of ACT, which came back from the brink of financial disasterbut that didn t really succeed in this book.

  5. I picked this book up at the SF Library as it was part of their One City One Book effort to get all San Franciscans to read the same book, of course with an SF theme As one who really enjoys theater, I thought it would be enjoyable read However, it blew me away Carey Perloff is an amazing person and what I loved about the book was her discussions about live theater itself and its role in arts overall as well as the American Conservatory Theater ACT as a distinctive SF institution She really help [...]

  6. I found Perloff s book to be very interesting As a theatergoer, it was interesting to get inside the action of the American Conservatory Theatre and see some of the ins and outs of its history under current artistic director, Carey Perloff To my knowledge, there s only one other published book on ACT, and it is scholarly sort of , and doesn t have the personal touch and investment that Perloff has I also liked that I had seen some plays at ACT and could envision the space It was very good.

  7. A One City, One Book selection Interesting My father worked with her and said nice things about her It gets a little name droppy at times, but there s a lot on how a show is put on that s pretty interesting She also bemoans the lack of interest in highbrow theater, but rather than leaving it at that, she goes on to outline how she plans to change that.

  8. Not typically the type of book that I read, but I however found it interesting It gave me look into the world of Director s Perloff s world which I found really interesting, and I also appreciated the honest look at the Theater life I won this great book on GoodReads and like I do with most my wins I will be paying it forward by giving my win either to a friend or library to enjoy.

  9. Structurally a bit of a mess, as it seems to have been written to be a lot of different things at once a personal story, a case study, a hortatory attempt to convince readers of the importance of the theater In the end it doesn t matter, though, for her immense energy and passion shine through, and the scope of her achievement is awe inspiring Recommended.

  10. Such an interesting read about working in the not for profit theatre world Although this book is focused on San Francisco it felt really relevant to the Canadian non profit theatre scene.
