Popular Ebook Esperanza Street Fun but useless fact: I picked this up while at the library b/c it had a cool cover, and took it home because it seemed at first glance like a Filipino version of Oscar Wao. It ended up being less about the wildness of pubescence and more of a beautiful rendering of a Filipino barrio and its inhabitants. Surprisingly, it also offered up an interesting narrative treatment of gentrification and community identity, both of which have been on my mind a lot lately. 3.5 stars seems more appropriate, but a solid summer read.

  2. As a Filipina, all the characters felt so familiar having grown up on Western literature and mostly white male authors it was a new experience to recognize so much of myself and the characters of my life in a book For me this was Esperanza Street s greatest charm.

  3. This is a coming of age tale set in a port town in the Philippines It follows the lives of those who live and work on Esperanza Street, which runs from the sea, a fairly poor port area, uphill to affluent homes Joseph works as a houseboy for Mary Morelos, a widow whose own two sons are close to him in age, so he exists in an uneasy balance between servant and friend Though his story is filled in through flashbacks, the bulk of the novel is set in the summer of 1981, when irrevocable change come [...]

  4. The first third is fantastic it reminded me of Perec s Life A User s Manual in the way it seemed concerned with populating a fictional location than creating a plot, almost every chapter a short, colourful and somewhat melancholy introduction to one of the denizens of Esperanza Street the curandero, the priestess, the head stevedore, the teenage comics writer But the seeds of a plot are planted nonetheless, and when plot takes over, the book loses its spark I ll still keep an eye out for Keni s [...]
