Lagerkvist was born in 1891 in southern Sweden In 1910 he went to Uppsala as a student and in 1913 he left for Paris, where he was exposed to the work of Pablo Picasso He studied Middle Age Art, as well as Indian and Chinese literature, to prepare himself for becoming a poet His first collection of poetry was published in 1916 In 1940 Lagerkvist was chosen as one of the aderton the eighteen of the Swedish Academy.Lagerkvist wrote poetry, novels, plays, short stories and essays He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1951 for the artistic vigour and true independence of mind with which he endeavours in his poetry to find answers to the eternal questions confronting mankind.

Secondo libro che leggo di Lagerkvist e secondo di tematica apertamente religiosa Tuttavia questo mi piaciuto decisamente meno rispetto a Barabba, che ho trovato molto pi vicino alla mia sensibilit , che trattava di una religiosit molto pi quotidiana e che aveva dei toni pi intimisti Pellegrino sul mare invece sicuramente risente del fatto di essere il secondo libro di una trilogia ahim , l ho scoperto solo dopo averlo portato a casa dalla biblioteca, ma fortunatamente l introduzione di Fulvio F [...]

Slowly and surely, I have been enchanted by Lagerkvist s novels His stories are short and have a great impact, leaving all interpretation and didacticism to the reader, this novel being no exception This novel continues as the fourth in a series of somewhat interconnected stories and continues it strongly If you have read the others starting with Barabbas and likes his treatment on the matter of faith, good evil, and purpose, this book is for you.

In many ways this is a very well written novel the narrative is absolutely gripping at times And yet, in truth, it reads like half a book Some very big themes are raised and never dealt with adequately So, having read this and The Sibyl, I still find myself far impressed with Lagerkvist s dynamic short stories.
