Popular Ebook Amazing Fishing Stories An interesting twist on the normal anthology, this, as Paul Knight sticks to a line somewhere between fact and fiction, suggesting in his introduction that each of these 45 short tales has a foundation of truth that he has chosen to embellish in places for dramatic purposes. The tales are grouped in seven categories: Captured Monsters, Interfering Animals, Ghosts, Amazing Days, Extraordinary Tales, Research and Reminiscences and Lost Leviathans.Early on, I began to think the breathless bombardment of stories lasting just a couple of pages might have been better worked as a group of fewer but longer items, giving the author scope to develop plots and characters that remain longer in the memory. In terms of entertainment, however, he won me over the more the book progressed and I like the ‘standfirst’ format borrowed from magazines, where a brief paragraph below the headline provides a summary of the story that follows. The premises of the tales are good and Knight builds on them well, covering the whole ambit of fishing, from coarse to sea, around the world – I counted something like 25 of the stories with flyfishing as their theme - although the book has to overcome one or two glaring errors that threaten its credibility somewhat. I can just about cope with being told that Paul Gascoigne’s wonder goal against Scotland was scored in the ‘European Cup’ but I shudder to think what Lee Wulff would have made of his pet creation at the vice being referred to as a ‘Royal wolf’. Nor will sea anglers be thrilled at seeing ‘pirk’ spelt ‘perk’.Yet the book prevails regardless, partly because of the wide array of fishing themes upon which it touches, which prevent it from becoming as repetitive as I initially feared. The right way to play New Zealand trout, Coca-Cola’s part in curing seasickness, being hit by an iceberg while fishing, which river could see the British salmon record finally broken and why the mahseer is a deeply spiritual fish; it’s all covered in what is one of the better fishing anthologies in a crowded category. The calibre of the ghost stories, in particular, is so good that I think I know in which direction Paul Knight should head if he feels up for a sequel…
