Bestseller Ebook Waluk Don't let the adorable protagonist fool you, this is not a book for a young child. This is a book for a kid who knows about polar bears, understands what they have to do to stay alive, and isn't too sentimental about it. My issue with this graphic novel is that it's stuck somewhere in between adorable and harsh reality without really finding a landing place. That being said, I enjoyed this story of Waluk, the polar bear cub left to fend for himself in today's reality of dwindling resources. The story is a good one, with danger, humor, and a bit of a Native American flavor (which is only fitting, considering the setting). The art is gorgeous....funny, gory, menacing all in turns. There's a short lesson on the endangerment of polar bears at the end of the book.

  2. This was an interesting book due to it is one of the only graphic books that I have come across that could be geared towards a younger audience Unfortunately due to some of the graphic and gruesome elements that add to the story itself I would say it is better geared towards older elementary kids and or early middle ages although the actual story itself may end up driving them away with its lack of realism and it s cutesy plotline. One of its strengths and perhaps also one of its weaknesses is th [...]

  3. Waluk is a polar bear cub on his own After floundering a bit in his efforts to survive, he meets an old polar bear named Manitok The two team up to find food and shelter in the unforgiving far north Although the story is ultimately episodic, there is an ongoing theme of the pair of polar bears contact with humans Three of the pages of back matter discuss conservation concerns and modern threats to polar bear habitats This story was originally told in Spanish and published in Spain, and there are [...]

  4. This caught my attention because I ve always liked polar bears It has nice art and a cut story, but ultimately feels a bit strange to me Much of it is very fact based, even including an afterword telling about the current plight of polar bears, so it feels a bit out of place having all of the bears suddenly act in a very un bear like way, coordinating a rescue mission unless that is based on a true event, but I think it would make that clear if it were so And as a story, it has a kind of weak co [...]

  7. My daughter loves graphic novels, and I m always looking for new ones because she zooms through several a day when she s in a reading mood This was a hit First, high credit for the two pages of outtake sketches at the end She put a piece of plain paper over them and traced all the polar bear sketches for herself immense satisfaction with the results I ve never seen another graphic novel with this type of sketch page, and it was a really nice addition She was inspired enough by this book to talk [...]

  9. The science of global warming is spot on and the polar bear behavior and biology, and the bears are engaging On the minus side, I m not sure where it was supposed to be set although maybe that doesn t matter , and there isn t a single female character identifiable in the whole thing Well, there s reference to Waluk s mother, but she s never shown Maybe I should start giving all books the Bechdel test and failing where appropriate The names of the bears and the legend seem to be rooted in a speci [...]

  10. Me gusta la historia, las ilustraciones chul simas, es c mic, pero me parece que quieren meter demasiada info cient fica que no se integra bien en la historia.

  11. Waluk is a young polar bear cub who feels abandoned by his mother He sets off on his own to find some food Not knowing how nor being quite strong enough to hunt on his own he decides to steal bird eggs Eventually he encounters a fellow loner who is on the other end of the lifespan Manitok is an old bear who is getting thin and losing his teeth so he is no longer the best hunter Together the two explore their dwindling habitat looking for food and encountering humans at various times This graphic [...]

  12. I really like the illustrations of this graphic novel and don t even mind the rather predictable Disneyesque story of an old bear taking a young cub under his wing with the end result that the young cub has an opportunity to save the old bear What is problematic is the veneer of environmental significance and the end note that gives the population for polar bears as 20 25 thousand with the warning that it is estimated there will only be 6 8 by 2050 I can t pretent to really know polar bear popul [...]

  13. 3 1 2 stars Waluk is a polar bear cub who had been abandoned by his mother Apparently, this is the way things are done in the polar bear world He has to learn to fend for himself, but in the changing world, food is growing increasingly scarce, and he is finding it very difficult to do Fortunately he meets an old, wise polar bear named Manitok Manitok has plenty of knowledge to share with Waluk, but he is growing too old and toothless to put his knowledge to work Together the two are able to surv [...]

  14. Waluk is a young polar bear who has been left alone and has to fend for himself in the vast Arctic lands Waluk knows what and how he needs to hunt for food but is too afraid of doing it on his own Add to that the changing temperature and landscape Waluk befriends an older bear Manitok and together the pair learn to survive in the harsh conditions for a polar bear. This is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel The harsh realities of the melting ice makes for a serious backdrop for this story tel [...]

  15. This is a cute and quick graphic novel about a young polar bear who is forced to learn to survive on his own after being abandoned by his mother as is common with polar bears While out searching for food, unsuccessfully, he meets the aging bear Manitok, who takes Waluk under his wing and teaches him to hunt When Manitok is caught in a trap, though, Waluk must use his wits to figure out how to save him. This story dealt well with the harsh realities of nature and issues related to hunting and glob [...]

  16. The story was a little choppy and seemed to jump from scene to scene a little too quickly sometimes Children may have trouble following the events Children may also miss the very blatant commentary on global warming This graphic novel seems confused as to whether it is for children or adults There is a very definite underlying message about global warming and melting ice, but the overall story is about the friendship between young Waluk who was abandoned by his mother and wise old Manitok who ta [...]

  17. Naturally when this came in at the library I wanted to read it because it s a comic about polar bears And it is a fairly cute story However and this is probably pretty nerdy of me , I felt like for a very informational comic, this one contained a good bit of information that is misleading about polar bear behavior The fantasy and real life elements of the story just did not mesh well for me, and I kept finding myself distracted by one element or the other feeling out of place I really wanted to [...]

  18. A young polar bear cub who can t fend for himself meets an old, nearly toothless polar bear and together they manage to survive in an environment that is becoming hostile as global warming causes the Arctic sea ice to melt This sounds grim but is actually a very funny, sweet, heart warming story, gorgeously illustrated The story is definitely fiction, but there is a useful short essay at the end explaining why polar bears really are in danger I ll be bringing this on school visits next spring

  19. Full review at unleashingreaders p 1561Waluk is a young polar bear who is alone in the world and luckily finds an older polar bear to help him survive I love that this story is told in a graphic novel because it allows us to see what Waluk is experiencing I think this is really important because many readers will not be familiar with the setting and animals Additionally, there are nonfiction aspects where global warming and human impact on polar bears is discussed even with a bibliography in the [...]

  20. Children s graphic novel set in the Arctic, about an abandoned polar bear cub Waluk wakes to find his mother gone and his hunger acute He meets an aged old bear named Manitok, and the two pair up to try and find food End notes include information about the Arctic environment and resources for further study Informative with a pleasant dose of humor The drama of climate change and human incursion is depicted with honesty and leavened with humor Translated from the Spanish.

  21. Waluk is a powerful story about the dangers of Global Warming, drilling, and humans that endanger these powerful and beautiful animals Told through comic like graphics, the story of Waluk who gets lured by human trash, captured, and eventually rescued is stunning Graphic books are becoming common and my kids seriously love them This is an adventure, a heartbreaking and heart hoping story that is sure to inspire questions, conversations, and hopefully change 5

  22. Fans of graphic novels or animals stories will like this one about a young polar bear and his mentor It also explores the real issues i.e declining food sources, humans facing polar bears in the Arctic Circle This can also be shared those who are interested in endangered species and environmental issues.

  23. Great comic The line work is like a mix of Herge and Watterson, and the watercolor is beautiful The story does an excellent job of walking the line between naturalistic Polar Bear behavior and human like dialogue It is funny, touching, and informative in all the right ways Definitely one that I will buy and read to the kids.

  24. This was a great read Not only did the narrative hold up really well, but we were introduced to just about every issue surrounding polar bears that I can think of global warming, habitat endangerment, and so, so much Plus, the drawings were SO wonderful and adorable I think I might have to own this one

  25. While I thought the illustrations were very good, I had a problem with some of the ways polar bears are portrayed For instance, I m preeeetttty sure bears aren t on the lookout for humans to munch on whenever they get the chance Also, the book s purpose of teaching about global warming is somewhat glossed over especially when fantasy elements suddenly appear at the very end.

  26. This is an extremely informational graphic novel, and not really good for anything but information It s kind of cute, but I felt like it was being cute so you wouldn t notice having vast quantities of information about polar bears shoved down your throat And I m not a fan of that feeling.

  27. This graphic novel style book examines the plight of polar bears through the eyes of one young bear, Waluk Abundant information about polar bears and their challenges to survive because of habitat encroachment and global warming.

  28. Waluk is a young polar bear abandoned by his mother He meets Manitok is an old bear that no has trouble hunting Together work together to find food against the odds of their ever changing and declining environment.

  29. meh classic illustrations storyline told from perspective of polar bears, as if the author knows what polar bears think, especially part about humans being tasty to them come on global warming theme just meh.

  30. I thought the illustrations were too cute for the audience that would be up to the weight of the message, accompanied by a story too grim for the students who would appreciate the adventures of a young polar bear cub.
